Shopping + Family

Barcelona has some fantastic shops for all the family. Here is El Palauet Living Barcelona's pick of the best...

  casa anita

Casa Anita

C/Vic 14

At Casa Anita they believe that good books never go out of fashion and at El Palauet we couldn’t agree more. Opened in 2005 this children’s bookshop takes its name from the previous shop owner, Anita, who used to sell children’s clothing. Alongside a wide variety of books ranging from ‘Baby’s first book’ to poetry, theatre, books in other languages and even a small section of books for adults, hang original illustrations and readings and workshops take place. One thing that makes this children’s bookshop particularly special is the patio garden area used for illustration workshops, group activities and even a book catwalk! So, to quote my favourite childhood author, Roald Dahl; “So please, oh PLEASE, we beg, we pray, Go throw your TV set away, And in its place you can install, A lovely bookshelf on the wall.” And fill it with books from Casa Anita.

Jocs Mallart

C/ Jaume I, 17

A veritable treasure trove of board games and card games, Jocs Mallart was opened in 1947 and is still owned by the same family today. Having passed through three generations there is literally nothing the staff don’t know about these perfect pastimes and are always ready to help and advise.  The wooden toys are perfect for the smaller members of the family and teenagers and parents alike will find everything they need to be entertained for hours. Specialists in chess sets, the shop is filled to the rafters with beautifully hand crafted sets in wood and marble, many are made locally and are collectables. Other favourites are card games which the owner, Ramón Mallart, believes to be some of the best things to combat stress and here at Jocs Mallart you’ll find a great variety as well as the traditional Spanish playing cards which features different characters to the standard 52 card French deck which is the most widely used. Jocs Mallart also have a large collection of new board games enjoying a renaissance in popularity, alongside the old favourites. Here at Jocs Mallet you can find everything to satisfy your game playing thirst.

Rock 01 Cool Baby

C/Bonavista 16

For the coolest babies in town there is only one place to buy clothes: Rock 01 Cool Baby on Carrer Bonavista. Opened in 2006 and inspired by the owner, Coni Diaz’s very cool baby, Valentina, this baby boutique features clothing from brands such as Bobo Choses, Yporqué, Visual Poetry, Mini Rodini, Munster Kids, Mini&Maximus, Nununu, and many more! Even Robert de Niro has popped in to peruse the über hip baby clothes on offer, though surely being Robert de Niro’s child is cool enough... If the idea of dressing your little ones in pink or blue babygros brings you out in hives, Rock 01 Cool Baby is the place to go.

C/La Ribera 1

Are your little ones budding fashionistas? Do they like to strut their stuff in the playground and wear only the latest trends? If yes, then Sugarfreaks is the shop for you. A family shop, Sugarfreaks focuses on clothes which are ‘slow manufactured’. Clothes which have been made with  time and love and organic fabrics to provide only the best for your children. The shop features local and international brands such as Scotch and Soda, Stella McCartney Kids, minirodini, Bobo Chooses and the aptly named Finger in the nose. The designs are modern and fun, full of patterns and colours to play around with. Even the interior design of the shop is child friendly; the ceiling is decorated with giant paper aeroplanes!

This treasure trove of a children’s shop is filled with products ‘made with love’ in France and Spain. With a focus on design and non-toxic materials, Nobodinoz sells a variety of kid friendly items, from clothing to accessories to furniture. All in miniature for the mini people in your life. Personal favourites are a rucksack with the face of a fox and a baby-gro with a built-in tutu! I also have to add that I would forsake all the trappings of adult life to be small enough to fit in their mini sized children’s tepee.
